Luxulyan Valley

Luxulyan Valley is a wooded valley along the River Par. It has a large concentration of early19th century industrial remains and was designated as part of a World Heritage Site in 2006.

Most of the remains are as a result of the endeavours of Joseph Treffry the owner of Fowey Copper Mines one of the deepest, richest copper mines in Cornwall. At its peak it was worked by 6steam engines and 17 water wheels. In the late 1820's Treffry built a port at Par Harbour and linked it, via a canal and tramways through the valley and where there was a flat route along the eastern side of the valley Treffry built a viaduct, to the village of Luxulyan . The woods were also an essential part of the early tin mines as they were used for making charcoal needed for smelting the tin.

In 1992 the viaduct was given to the Cornish Heritage Trust and rest of the land to the Count Council to be preserved for the enjoyment of the community.
