Fowey

Fowey is a busy Cornish village with a small commercial port that also provides mooring for leisure boats. During WW2 Fowey was a centre for air-sea rescue and was one of the places where the D-Day invasions were launched. St Catherine's Point is on the Fowey side of the harbour and in medieval times St Catherine's Chapel stood on the cliff top and the lights inside were used as a lighthouse. The fort below St Catherine's Castle was built in the reign of Henry the eighth and is accessible, on foot , from Readymoney Cove.

The local church was destroyed by French marauders in the 15th century but was later rebuilt by the Earl of Warwick. Place House is a tower that stands behind the church and is the home of the Treffry family since the 13th century but is not open to the public. One of the oldest houses in Fowey ' called the House of Foye , is now a shop yet has hardly changed in structure at all.

There are regular ferries to Polruan and Boddinick on the opposite side of the harbour and the views from the top of the hill are "spectacular" well worth a visit. The ferry house ,named "Ferryside", is the home of the De Maurier family. Daphne De Maurier is probably the most famous resident of the town and every year in May Fowey hosts The De Maurier Festival.

During the summer months the town hall is used as a museum and small aquarium and there are many craft shops , galleries and good restaurants to visit here.
